KS2 RE: Islam Beliefs and Practices Guide

Core Muslim beliefs, the Qur'an and the Five Pillars of Islam for KS2 Religious Education.

Core beliefs

Muslims believe in one God, Allah, and that Muhammad was the final prophet who received God's message. Islam means "submission" to the will of Allah.

The Qur'an

The Qur'an is the Muslim holy book, believed to be the word of Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is treated with great respect and used for guidance in daily life.

The Five Pillars

The Five Pillars of Islam are the core practices: Shahadah (declaration of faith), Salah (praying five times a day), Zakat (giving to charity), Sawm (fasting during Ramadan) and Hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if able).

Places of worship

Muslims worship in a mosque, which usually has a minaret (tower) and a dome, and a special area (mihrab) showing the direction of Mecca to pray towards.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the correct names and order of the Five Pillars.
  • Assuming all Muslims practise identically — traditions vary between communities and countries.
  • Confusing Ramadan (the month of fasting) with Hajj (the pilgrimage).
