The River Nile

Ancient Egyptian civilisation grew up along the River Nile, which flooded every year and left behind fertile soil, allowing farmers to grow crops in the middle of the desert.

Pharaohs and society

Egypt was ruled by a pharaoh, believed to be a god on Earth. Below the pharaoh, society included priests, scribes, craftworkers and farmers, with enslaved people at the bottom.

Pyramids and mummification

The pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs. Egyptians believed in an afterlife, so bodies were preserved through mummification, and tombs were filled with objects the person might need after death.

Writing and religion

The Ancient Egyptians wrote using hieroglyphics, a system of picture symbols. They worshipped many gods and goddesses, each associated with different aspects of life, such as Ra (the sun god) and Anubis (god of the afterlife).

Common mistakes

• Assuming the pyramids were built by enslaved people alone — evidence suggests many were paid workers.
• Forgetting why the Nile flooding mattered — it made farming possible in a desert climate.
• Mixing up hieroglyphics (Egyptian picture writing) with other ancient writing systems.
