KS2 Geography: The UK's Physical and Human Features Guide

The four countries

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each with its own capital city: London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.

Physical features

The UK has varied physical geography, including mountain ranges (like the Highlands of Scotland and the Pennines), major rivers (the Thames, Severn and Trent) and a long, varied coastline.

Human features

Human geography looks at how people use the land — cities, towns, farms, roads and industry. The UK's population is concentrated in and around its major cities.

Counties and regions

England is divided into counties, each with its own towns and local identity. Knowing the region you live in and its neighbouring areas helps build a mental map of the country.

Common mistakes

• Confusing the United Kingdom, Great Britain and the British Isles — they refer to different areas.
• Mixing up physical features (natural) with human features (made by people).
• Forgetting that Northern Ireland is part of the UK but not part of Great Britain.
