Why worship matters

Worship allows believers to express devotion, seek guidance and strengthen their relationship with God or ultimate reality, whether performed communally or individually.

Forms of worship

Worship can be liturgical (following a fixed, structured form, such as a church service) or non-liturgical (more spontaneous), and can happen in a place of worship or privately at home.

Pilgrimage

A pilgrimage is a journey to a religiously significant place, such as Hajj to Mecca for Muslims or a visit to the River Ganges for Hindus, often undertaken to deepen faith or seek forgiveness.

The role of festivals

Festivals mark important events or beliefs, strengthen religious identity and community, and often involve specific rituals, food or acts of worship connected to their meaning.

Common mistakes

• Assuming worship looks the same across all religions, or even across all believers within one religion.
• Describing what happens during a pilgrimage or festival without explaining its religious significance.
• Forgetting personal, private worship is just as significant as communal worship in many religions.
