Just War theory

Many religions have conditions under which war may be considered justified, such as being a last resort, declared by a proper authority, and fought with methods proportionate to the cause — known broadly as Just War theory.

Pacifism

Some religious believers reject violence altogether, arguing that peaceful resolution is always required, often drawing on teachings about loving your enemy or non-violence.

Weapons of mass destruction

Religious views on nuclear and chemical weapons often focus on proportionality and the protection of innocent life, with many believers arguing such weapons can never meet the conditions of a just war due to their indiscriminate harm.

Victims of war

Most religions teach a duty to support victims of conflict, such as refugees, through charity, aid work and welcoming those displaced by war.

Common mistakes

• Presenting only one religious view on a theme rather than a range of views within and across religions.
• Stating a viewpoint without a supporting reason or quotation.
• Confusing Just War theory's conditions with pacifism's rejection of war altogether.
