GCSE Italian: House, Home and Local Area Revision Guide

Learn rooms of the house, local area vocabulary, and prepositions of place in Italian.

Key vocabulary: the house

  • la casa — house
  • l'appartamento — flat
  • la cucina — kitchen
  • il soggiorno — living room
  • la camera da letto — bedroom
  • il bagno — bathroom
  • il giardino — garden

Key vocabulary: the local area

  • la città — town/city
  • il paese — village
  • il negozio — shop
  • il parco — park
  • la chiesa — church
  • il mercato — market

Grammar point: prepositions of place

Prepositions of place are essential for describing where things are. Key phrases: vicino a (near to), lontano da (far from), davanti a (in front of), dietro (behind), tra/fra (between), a destra (to the right), a sinistra (to the left), sempre dritto (straight ahead).

"A" and "da" combine with the definite article, e.g. vicino a + il parco becomes vicino al parco, and vicino a + la chiesa becomes vicino alla chiesa. Example: Il mercato è tra la chiesa e il parco — "The market is between the church and the park".

Describing your town

Use C'è (there is) and Ci sono (there are) to describe what is in your town: Nella mia città c'è un mercato e ci sono molti negozi — "In my town there is a market and there are lots of shops". Add opinions with Mi piace abitare qui perché... (I like living here because...) for higher marks.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to combine "a" with the article, e.g. writing "vicino a il parco" instead of "vicino al parco".
  • Confusing "città" (city/town) with "paese" (village/country) — "paese" can mean both, so context matters.
  • Using "c'è" with a plural noun instead of "ci sono", e.g. saying "c'è due negozi" instead of "ci sono due negozi".
