What is an ecosystem

An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with each other and their physical environment. Energy flows through an ecosystem via food chains and food webs, and nutrients are cycled between plants, animals and soil.

Tropical rainforest characteristics

Tropical rainforests have a hot, wet climate year-round, supporting dense vegetation arranged in distinct layers — emergent, canopy, under-canopy and shrub layer — each adapted to different light levels.

Causes of deforestation

Rainforests are cleared for reasons including commercial farming (like cattle ranching and palm oil), logging, mineral extraction and road building to support economic development.

Impacts and management

Deforestation causes loss of biodiversity, soil erosion and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainable management strategies include selective logging, replanting schemes, ecotourism and international agreements to reduce deforestation.
